Martin Rees - Gateway Transport Interchange

The building I have chosen is a newly built metrolink /rail / bus station in East Manchester off Oldham Road. It has some very strong design features combining organic, hard geometry, soft curves, symmetry, simplicity of form following function. Viewed from a distance the tall mast suggests a space rocket and the canopy can look like the hard shell of a beetle. Viewed from another angle it can look like a ship.

I have chosen this particular structure because I think the sculptural qualities of its design could almost be miniaturised and worn as a brooch or pendant with very little change.

The piece I have made is a ring. It was difficult to decide whether to take inspiration from some of the many striking details of the design constructed in steel, copper and glass, or to try and reflect the visual impact of the building as a whole.

As can be seen by the finished piece, I chose to put together a few strong elements in different colours of gold with contrasting textures to produce a ring of a sculptural, organic appearance.
