Melissa Hansom - Royal Exchange

Old and New, Traditional and Modern - these contrasting elements are what sums up the exterior and interior of the Royal Exchange Theatre Building.

Once Manchester’s Cotton Exchange, it was severely damaged in 1996 by the IRA bombings but after restoration it now sums up the new exciting architectural era of Manchester today as it contrasts old style architecture with modern and contemporary design.

The modern theatre ‘pod’ is completely unrelated to its casing in the classical style Exchange building and the ‘building within a building’ idea fascinates me, so that’s what I set out to make – a ring within a ring.

My piece has two contrasting ‘faces’ to it. The outside dome showcases the traditional techniques of stone setting and granulation (a technique dating back to 2000 BC) and takes inspiration from the amazing glass domed roof of the building. The piece can then be taken apart by removing the stone setting to reveal a modern interior patterned with geometric shapes to symbolise an audience and abstracted symbols of the theatres’ staircases are shown by rectangular blocks of coloured resin
