Rachel Hearne - The Lowry Centre

This piece was inspired by the Lowry Center at Salford Quays. I have chosen to commemorate this building because it hosts some of Britain’s most talented artists’ and serves as a physical reminder of how much Manchester's Salford Quays has changed over the past 100 years.

The concept of using the body as a foundation for the work led me to create this bracelet structure that, to me, mimics what the Lowry Center embodies; an architectural play between weight and form while hinting at the vibrant colour found internally.

The way that the bracelet engages with the wearer's arm creates an exciting relationship between the soft organic nature of human skin revealed and the structural lines and weight that keeps it in place.

Tagua nut, also known as vegetable ivory, is a sustainable resource that comes from Central American rainforests. This eco friendly material was used in the Manchester textile industry pre-WWII for buttons, bobbins and needles, eventually being replaced by plastics. Using tagua allowed me to experiment with new techniques in carving and dying. Another unique material used is shibuishi, a Japanese alloy originally used for it rich rose gold colour in sword making. Shibuishi literally means three quarters and is comprised of 75 parts copper and 25 parts fine silver.
