Sam Mills - Daily Express Building

The Daily Express Building becomes a jeweller’s foundation, owing to the architectural repetitive structure and the history of news from the area; it is also my favourite building in Manchester.

The bangle was made using advanced engineering techniques, such as laser cutting and etching, the same technique is used in architectural components, and more importantly within the printing processes.

Laser etching was utilised for the traditional newspaper type face that decorate the stainless steel flat plates, this is due to the Daily Express Building being a former press building.

The bracelet uses the foundation of the wrist, it’s held together with a pressed bolt mechanism on a pivot it also has a layered repeating structure inspired by the steel and tinted glass sections of the building. The bracelet is interactive, the sections can be split to become an uncomfortable and binding cuff, to show the restrictive nature of the media and promoting the ‘freedom of expression’.
